Keeler is a strange mixture of abandoned old, abandoned new, and a few current residents. A mill was constructed here in 1880 to process ore from the famous Cerro Gordo mines, and a 300 foot wharf was built on Owens Lake to transport the silver bars. In the 1920's water from Owens Lake was diverted to Los Angeles, and Owens Lake dried up, creating a huge dust bowl. Keeler became a near-ghost town.
