The American Hotel and the Crapo house at Cerro Gordo, California. The infamous "Yellow Grade Road" drops 5000' in 7.5 miles to Owens Dry Lake.
Silver mining started here in 1867. Los Angeles owes its existence as a major city to Cerro Gordo because San Pedro was the shipping point for the ore, and the city was the main supply point for the mines.
UPDATE:
A devastating fire burned down both of these buildings June 15, 2020. Most of the rest of the town is intact. There is a fund raiser to rebuild the hotel here: https://www.gofundme.com/f/cerro-gordo
